Babuji’s sayings and teachings

Maulana Rumi in his universally famed Mathnavi, says:

Translation: "Whenever he (i.e., a friend of Allah) says is as the word of Allah, even though it comes from the throat of a human being.

Hazrat Babuji’s (R.A) sayings and teachings provide us the pattern of life, the ways by which we can be successful both herein and hereafter. Following are some sayings of Hazrat Babuji (R.A) which were extracted from various letters written by Hazrat Babuji (R.A) to his ‘sangees’ (friends - devotees):

  • Never leave your Allah – object of worship under any circumstances.

  • Everything is in His (God’s) hands.

  • Prayers are compulsory. Deliberately omitting even a single prayer leads to Kufr.

  • Form a habit of doing good deeds.

  • Treat all in a good way in the belief that they are God’s creation.

  • Always abide by the rights of God (Haqooq-Allah) and rights of man (Haqooq-ul-Ibaad).

  • God has bestowed on you His infinite blessings. Hence always follow His commands.

  • Charity removes hardships.

  • In case you don not harm anyone and he harms you, he will be accountable before God.

  • In sincere devotion lies the spirit of Ibadat (Prayer).

  • Whet your spiritual appetite – With strong devotion the distance stretching over a thousand years gets reduced to no more than a mere step.

  •  It is better for man to die rather than forget his Lord and Supreme Master even for a single moment.

  • Establish links with Him (Allah Almighty) – He is all forgiveness.

  • Be humble – abandon it not.

  • Abandon not the path of righteousness.

  • 'Habal-e-Mateen' are those loved by God. Hold on to them.

  • Maintain purity (wazu-ablution) all the time. Don’t give up "Namaz-e-Punj Waqt" (praying five times a day).

  • Exploitation and tyranny are not good things. Fear God. He is the Real King and kingdom belongs to Him.

  • Consider man nothing else but the creation of Allah and treat him accordingly.

  • Observe Haqooq-Allah (the rights of Allah) and Haqooq-al-ibad (the rights of mankind).

  • The poor and the aggrieved enjoy an early Hearing. You’ll be asked about your deeds, and the relations you maintained with mankind.

  • Take mercy on His people blessing that they are His creation. Deal with them nicely so that they may feel happy and pray for you.

  • Cruelty and atrocity are not good. Fear God. Sovereignty belongs to Him (Allah Almighty). He has granted you a lot and can take all away if He so desires.

  • Eid in reality is for those who have become His; whose love is in their hearts, who are busy in carrying out His orders and are working day in and day out seeking His acceptance and pleasure.

  • Since you’ve recited the verse (of the Holy Quran) that whatever comes, comes from Him (Allah Almighty), why should thou then feel aggrieved.

  • Strictly observe "Ikhlaq-e-Husna" (the code of nobility and proper conduct).

  • One should always ponder over the purpose for which he came in this world, and what he has so far achieved.

  • Spend your time in remembering Him. It was He who granted you this time.

  • Spend your life in His way.

  • Without "Yaad-e-Ilahi" (constant remembrance of Allah) "Rahat-e-Qalbi" (contentment of heart) cannot be secured.

  • Beware! This world is not a place of true happiness.

  • This world is a traveller’s inn, none can stay here on permanent basis. Always keep in mind the long journey that you will have to travel.

  • Remember God wherever thou art.

  • Live like a traveler.

  • Purchase from the shrines of Ahl-e-Allah (i.e., the saints). Abandon not the doorsteps which offer life-saving spiritual guidance.

  • Gallop towards Him even though are lame, disobedient and ugly-shaped. For God Almighty hath promised, “I am with those whose hearts are broken for my sake”.

  • Consider the path of "Salaf-e-Swal-e-heen" the code of righteous people, as the straight path.

  • Be prepared all the time to return to your abode.

  • Never abandon your Lord in whatever state you may be.

  • May God grant you the ability to serve His people.

  • Spend your entire life in His way.

  • Never must ye abandon hope.

  • This world is an illusion – a false deception. Don’t cultivate any relations with it, and don’t make any room for  it in your heart or you may end up in disaster.

  • Keep the company of noble people.

  • Remember Allah not for some personal interest or worldly benefit, but as your Lord – the Owner (Maalik and Rabb - God Almighty).

  • Consider your loyalty to His loved ones as an obligation you must always follow.

  • Focus not on the "Swaab" (spiritual rewards) but the Bestower of rewards (Allah).

  • Place the world’s entire pack of sins and a tiny portion of His Mercy on the other – He will not base His Judgment on Swaab (the amount of goodness earned) but on His Divine Mercy.

  • He has granted you everything and if He so desires, He can take it back from you at once as it is in our common knowledge.

  • He listens more to the poor and helpless people. You will be answerable tomorrow if He asks you as to what you have done with His creatures.

  • This universe is His book – take lessons from it.

  • The nature of foundation determines the character of the building constructed.

  • “Ishq” (Divine love) distinguishes man from a beast.

  • Spiritual love transforms a base metal to gold – it is the means as well as the end.

  • Cultivate sincerity, and observe it in all your deeds.

  • Life without worship is a disgrace – worship of God adorns life. God created Jinn and man exclusively for devotional purposes.

  • Friendship, if pure (pious), selfless, and for the sake of God, pays good dividend.

  • Momin must never lose hope – it is a sign of faith (Iman), and the absence is kufr (against faith).

  • Calamities must always be taken as tools by which He saves us from some other greater disasters. (Babuji’s maslak (code) was optimism and hope).

  • Despite the sins committed, He looks after the wrong-doer. This is an open proof of His Sovereignty being an everlasting one. A noble man, once his word is given, neither breaks his promise nor disassociates himself from others along his way – how could He (Allah) disregard me?

  • Be repentant of your sins – it pays. Satan despite his devotion and prayers lost everything due to his pride. Hazrat Adam (Aleih-is-Salaam) regretted over his shameful deed and won.  (From letter dated 24.1.1965)

  • Live with His Nisbat (reverential link). Take it along with you to His court. He will accept it and acknowledge it. It is the currency acceptable to His market.

  • Though we don’t deserve to be tested (do not possess such a high calibre) it is an act of Maalik (Allah Almighty). He draws the boat into a whirlpool and then becomes the Sailor (the guide) Himself.

  • He (Allah Almighty) adores “dard”; He loves a “dardmand” (one filled with zeal and intensity of pain). Since he does not possess these, He values them. One always values the things one is deprived of.

  • Even a minute’s disapproval and unwillingness on one’s part is contrary to the norms of Abudiyat (man’s status as Allah’s servant).

  • Hold others as better to your own-selves. Treat others accordingly in accordance with your status.

  • Abide by the rules of “Khush-Khalqi” – (gentle behaviour).

  • Distinguish between a well-wisher and a non-well-wisher. As it is essential to differentiate between a friend and a foe, similarly between a true friend and a hypocrite. Consultation with a friend is desirable.

  • The poor and needy (Maskeen) must always be extended a helping hand to work in the way of Allah and His Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H).

  • A beggar ought to beg according to the status of the person from whom he is begging. When you beg from God, request Him for nothing else than Himself, as other things have no significance before Him. The beggar should present before Him such presents which He does not possesses and that is humility alone.

  • Respect your elders and treat the young-ones with kindness.

  • The “subjected” – (the people being ruled over) are like one’s family and must be treated like-wise (well-treated).

  • Usurping someone else’s share is strictly forbidden.

  • When “disunity” prevails among family members, “Izzat” (regard/reverence) disappears. Much nobility (most reverend families have) withed away because of it.

  • This is a transitory world; take it as a waiting room; live like a way-farer, and lead your life accordingly. He is bringing out things from non-existence into existence. Study the wonders of creation. You are His book and it contains everything. Whatever you learn from it cannot be learnt from anything else.

  • Love is nourished by mutual relationship just as clapping is a work dine not single handed.  (extract from Babuji’s letter to Sheikh-ul-Jamia Sahib)

  • Hands at work, mind with the Beloved.

  • One should never lose hope in God’s benevolence. Suffering and hardships are transitory. These are not due to sins. If it is so, then what would you say about (martyrdom of) Hazrat Imam Hussain (R.A)?

  • He who had true relationship, won the (Iman) faith.

  • Times are hard. Don’t worry. Never leave patience. His servants are exposed to troubles but one should bear these with pleasure – whatever comes, cometh from his side.

  • Suicide is absolutely forbidden (in Islam). Even thinking about suicide is strictly prohibited. You should never lose hope.

  • Lord is Merciful and Benevolent. He keeps us as long as He likes. We bow our heads before Him.

  • Always follow a practice which is easy and tolerable, Allah likes an action which is permanent, however small it may be.

  • Don’t pollute thy thoughts with evil notions.     (from letter dated 17.01.65; 31.10.1965)

  • Repentance is a good sign. It signifies a move towards your Real being – one who moves, success.

  • Ecstatical raptures are a result of repentance, pain and anguish. These are liked by God.

  • A Momin can never lose hope. His verdict is that He will deal with the person according to the faith that he places with Him.

  • Whatever is meant for you will be provided to you. Your sustenance does not depend upon service or anything else. He (Allah Almighty) is the Benefactor.

  • Remain with (Wazu) ablution ceremonial washings all the time. At the time of prayer, leave all other work.

  • Those whose parents have died if present recitations from the Quran – will make the deported souls feel happy at the gifts sent by their noble descendents. (Letter dated 17.01.1964)
